A relatively new information organization system called folksonomies (short for folks and taxonomy) and tagging has emerged in the last decade and is revolutionizing the way people find information on the Internet. This is because when people use social bookmarking sites like del.icio.us; the site users collaborate on how to categorize online content by choosing certain keywords or tags. For instance, someone can post this on del.icio.us and file it with the tag “social bookmarking sites.” That would then make the article visible under the individual user’s “social bookmarking sites” tag and also under the community tag that displays all articles filed under that keyword. It’s a great way to harness the wisdom of crowds.
