Roads and traffic are considerations for conference venues in Christchurch
Traffic in Christchurch is having an impact on conferences in the garden city.Although our roads are wide and straight, with ample parking spaces if motorists do it right, there is a concern that Conference traffic and delegates should be able to move as freely and easily in the future as they do now.By 2021 it is estimated the number of vehicle trips on the city’s roads will go up 43%. That means pressure on road bottlenecks and parking.Over the last 10 years the number of cars per city household has gone up 11%. Due to cheap Japanese imports of second hand cars, I guess. And if that is the case, we may see a slow down when new emission standards and tougher import requirements begin to have an effect. It is part of the trend to car ownership, that has Christchurch boasting a higher than average rate of cars per person. In the last 10 years there has been a 15% increase in people parking their cars in dedicated council buildings, and now stands at over one million a year. For a conference venue to work well, it has to have good roads leading to it, and leaving. There are a good number of conference venues in Christchurch that have this. Hopefully the council will have acted so this will still be the case by 2021.
