I got fired! And now I need individual health insurance?

The job you held for years just downsized and now you are out of a job. Your child graduated college and no longer qualifies as a dependent on your health plan. You retired early before being eligible for Medicare. You got divorced, and the spouse was the one who provided health insurance through their employer. These are just a few possible scenarios in which you might be seeking individual health insurance. The great thing about obtaining health insurance through an employer or large group is the discounts on your rates. Being a part of a larger pool of people means that the risk to the insurance companies is spread out, therefore dropping the price. With individual health insurance, you would not have that luxury of a cheaper price.
